Solid Timber, or Timber and Board?

You'll find both in this collection, and the difference is worth knowing before you buy. Solid timber means real boards, cut so the grain runs right through the frame: Ritzy uses pinewood, Bellmont oak. Other frames put solid timber where the load sits and engineered board elsewhere, which is how Loft works. Every product page states what the frame is made from, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Choosing a Finish That Works With Your Room

Natural and beige are the biggest part of this range and they sit easily with linen, cream and soft grey bedding. White frames like Hamptons and Whitehaven suit a coastal room and keep a smaller bedroom feeling open. Darker browns and the charcoal Alpine hold their own against navy and deep green. Oak lands in between, warm without going heavy, and turns up in both Loft and Bellmont.

Common Questions About Timber Beds

Do timber beds creak?

Usually it's the joints rather than the timber. Bolts work loose over the first few months while the frame settles, so tightening them once is normally enough. On frames with slats, check they're seated properly in their brackets too.

What's the difference between a timber frame and a timber base?

Frames include the sides, and most come with a headboard, so it's the part you see. A base is the supporting platform on its own, which is what you want if you're keeping a bedhead or mounting one to the wall. The Apato Pinewood ones here are bases, and there are more in our bed bases range.

Will a timber frame work with my mattress?

Foam, pocket spring and hybrid all sit fine on the slat bases most of these frames use. Spacing matters more than the type, and foam generally wants slats closer together than a spring mattress does. If you're replacing both, sort the queen mattress at the same time so the heights work.

Do timber frames need much looking after?

Not much. A dry cloth for dust and a barely damp one for marks is enough, and keeping it out of direct sun stops the finish fading unevenly. Leave the solvents alone.

What bedding suits light or dark timber?

Light timber like pine and oak sits well with white, beige and soft grey. Darker browns take stronger colours, navy and rust especially. Natural linen works with both, so it's the safe pick if you change your bedding often.
