How to Choose the Perfect Rug for Your Home

A rug does more than just cover carpet or hard flooring. It pulls your furniture together, adds warmth underfoot, and changes how a whole room feels. Which one's right? That depends on where it's going and what you need it to do.

Floor Rugs for Living Rooms and Lounge Areas

Most people start with the living room. Makes sense. A large rug anchored under your sofa and coffee table ties the seating area together, gives the space a sense of cohesion. If you've got an open-plan layout, rugs are one of the best ways to define zones without putting up walls. Something plush and soft works when comfort underfoot is the priority. Or go with a flatweave with geometric patterns if you're after a modern look that can handle foot traffic.

We've got plenty of colour options too, from beige and cream through to grey, blue, and multicolour.

Bedroom Rugs That Add Warmth and Texture

Nothing beats that cosy feeling when your feet hit a soft rug first thing in the morning. Place a large rug under the bed so it extends on both sides, or try two runners along each side for a more tailored look. Wool rugs and plush textures are perfect for the bedroom. They're soft, warm, and add a layer of elegance to your sleep space that hard flooring on its own just can't match.

Choosing Rugs for Hallways, Dining Areas, and Outdoors

Hallways, entryways, and dining areas are different. These spots get high-traffic day in, day out, so you need something that holds up. Natural fibre rugs like jute are great here. They're hardwearing, full of texture, and they bring an artisan quality to narrow spaces that other materials don't quite manage. A runner rug in the hallway makes a welcoming first impression. Under the dining table, a durable rug protects your flooring from everyday wear and the odd spill.

Got a patio or alfresco area? Outdoor rugs designed for weather resistance bring comfort and style outside too.

What Size Rug Do You Need for Your Space?

Rug size matters more than most people think. Too small and it looks lost in the room. Too large and it takes over. A good rule: pick a rug large enough so the front legs of your furniture sit on it. This anchors the space and ties everything together. We stock small rugs and medium rugs right through to extra large floor rugs for bigger open-plan living areas.

Rug Materials and Styles to Suit Your Lifestyle

Wool is the go-to for softness and durability. Jute and other natural fibres give you that relaxed, textured feel. Synthetic blends are built for easy maintenance, which makes them a solid pick for busy households with kids or pets. Style-wise, our rug collection runs from modern designs and bohemian prints through to classic neutral tones, so there's something to match your furniture and personal taste.

Worth mentioning: a rug pad underneath stops your rug from slipping, protects your floors, and makes the whole thing last longer.

FAQs

How do I choose the right rug for my room? Start with size. Measure your space and make sure the rug fits around your furniture layout (not under all of it, just the front legs). Then think about material. Wool and plush textures suit bedrooms and living rooms. Jute and flatweaves handle high-traffic areas like hallways and dining rooms better. Last step is colour and pattern, pick something that works with your existing furniture and decor.

What rug materials are most durable for high-traffic areas? Jute and sisal are hard to beat for durability in hallways and entryways. Both are natural fibre rugs that wear well over time. Synthetic blends and flatweave rugs are also solid picks for heavy foot traffic areas because they're easy to clean and don't show wear as quickly.
